The Community Kitchen started as a work experience program that provided Work for the Dole clients with skills in food handling, hospitality, occupational health & safety while providing a warm healthy lunch time meal to those in need.
Inspire Community has now been running the Community Kitchen over the past 10 months, it originally started at the PCYC situated in Miller where 70 to 80 meals were supplied each week.
The Community Kitchen reached over 200 pensioners, unemployed, homeless and youth during its time at Miller. This was a great opportunity to refer them onto other Inspire Community services provided.
In October the Community Kitchen was relocated to Liverpool to meet even a greater need as well as making it more accessible to the rest of the community of Liverpool by being located approximately 200 meters from Liverpool railway station.
There has been a great deal of support from local business including butchers, fresh produce stores as well as other charities such as OZ Harvest and Food Bank. But there still remains a great need for more support and sponsors, as the numbers increase so does the need.
A couple of clients have shared what a difference the Community Kitchen has made in their lives:
Bill, a pensioner says that he is able to subsidize his bills and buy more food. Without this service he would go hungry. He also enjoys the friendly environment and the “quality” meals.
Tony, loves the “welcoming” service and feels free of judgment for using this kind of service. He enjoys the interaction with the workers, volunteers and fellow clients.
On December 22nd of December, Inspire Community Services would like to welcome the public to join us for a warm Christmas meal at the Liverpool Community Kitchen and Hub, Uniting Church 28 Pirie Street Liverpool. The meal will be provided at 12:30 pm. So please be punctual, you don’t wanna miss out!
This will be the last meal provided until we return next year on Tuesday 10th of January 2012.
If anyone would like to sponsor, donate, support or volunteer this project you can contact us on 02 9608 9688.
Have a fantastic Christmas!
